Hello there my fellow Punx, Skins, Rudies and Hooligans, this is your humble narrator. I've had alot of shit happen to me over the last year and spent alot of time without a home, job, truck, girl, or cat. So the internet was the least of my concerns. Well fuck, I have some of those things back, namely an apartment and my neighbors stolen wifi so I would like to get back to some of things that bring me happyness. That means posting music that needs to be shared with the world. So Cheers and EnjOi!.

Samchung

To someone who doesn't know much about Korea, Samchung is kind of weak as a band name; it just sounds like Samsung. And if you see it written in Korean, 삼청 교육대 (Samchung Kyo-Yook-Dae), it looks like a university name. But if you wear the band's name around Korea, you'll get an interesting variety of reactions.

In the early '80s, after South Korea's most popular dictator Park Junghee was assassinated by one of his closest friends, power was seized by the man who would become Korea's worst dictator, Chun Doohwan. Chun created Samchung Re-Education Center, a place where he sent gangsters, homeless, the undereducated, the overeducated, leftists--basically anyone he considered an enemy of the state. Apparently 60 000 people were arrested, and over 3000 died there. Certainly not as bad as what was going on in North Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia, etc, but remember that South Korea wasn't above prison camps as recently as the 1980s.

Having a band named Samchung around certainly raises awareness of this dark page in South Korean history. On the other hand, Samchung is basically a far-right band that seems to support Korea's pre-democracy regimes. I've never gotten a straight answer out of them on why they chose that name.

Samchung is probably the senior skinhead band of the scene, although they're not really identifiable as skinheads. The lead singer, Donghyuk, had to grow his hair out, apparently when he got a job at a pizza parlour--I'm guessing so that the hairnet would fit.

The bassist, Boram, still keeps his head shaved, and I'm sure he's still got that belly tattoo.

I'm not exactly sure how the doo-rags came in, but it seems they're copying similar nationalist bands in Japan. These guys are into all kinds of nationalism, having covered "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" by Skrewdriver. Also, Boram, the tattooed bassist shown above, swears he saw Pluton Svea play live when he was in Sweden.

As these guys have drifted more and more towards metal, they've brought pretty well the whole skinhead scene with them. It's their influence that turned Captain Bootbois away from oi and toward metal. Also the skinheads who don't follow along with them get left behind.

Here you can download a mix of Samchung songs from three stages in their 12-year career. The earliest song is "Rest in Peace," off an old compilation where you'd swear they're Agnostic Front. Next up are two songs from their album "Way of Men" (in which their session drummer was a woman). And it's finished up with the most recent songs, their half of a Samchung/Captain Bootbois split.

Dirty Small Town

As previously detailed on this site, the retirement of one of Korea's wildest, craziest skinheads resulted in the dissolution of Jiraltan99. The guitarist and bassist of that band went on to make their own project, Dirty Small Town. This band didn't last long, but they managed to get one good professional-sounding EP out before the inevitable.

The core of the band was Yongwook and Seokyoon, and they went through a few drummers and were even joined by the occasional guest vocalist.

They switched back and forth on vocal duties, but I got the impression Yongwook was supposed to be the main singer.

Seokyoon was a worryingly short guy, but as usual the short guys tend to be the toughest for some reason. And he was never afraid to take off his shirt. In fact, a little too not afraid. I have it on good authority from a Canadian skingirl who will go unnamed, but who was somewhat overweight at the time, that he was able to pick her up and carry her back to his home, where he had his way with her four times in one night.

(Yes, I make skinhead collector cards. Good for a laugh.)

To be honest, they were a little baffling to watch at times because of the dual vocals, but they had a few performances where they really nailed it. Whenever they performed, all the skinheads physically able to make it would be standing on stage with them, adding backing vocals and I guess trying to be in my photos.

Here's their old singer Seungpa coming temporarily back from retirement.

And this singer is Jiwoong, who used to front the band Oi Broker who never did a single recording.

Yongwook eventually grew tired of the direction the skinhead scene was taking, more deeply into far-right politics, and ended up growing his hair out. Seokyoon went the opposite direction, joining Samchung and I'm assuming joining the far-right brigade. I'll have a report on them in the future.

They released a six-song EP that does them justice and features the usual brigade of guest vocalists. Notable songs are track 2, "Working Hard, and track 6, "Dirty Small Town" (not another Pogues cover, don't worry) which features Yeongsoon from Attacking Forces and Jonghee from Rux. The funniest song is track 3, Gochu Chingu, which translates to the meaningless-sounding "Pepper Friend" but in Korean is a term for freakishly close friends, and gochu/pepper is slang for penis. Attacking Forces

It was January 25, 2004, the day after Skunk Hell, Korea's main punk club, had their first show. I woke up hungover and not totally sure I got back to my own bed. I had everything with me, the remains of my wrecked camera and all that. On the memory card was a recollection of things my own memory had blocked out. Oh, and there was something else new. A name/e-mail that I didn't remember getting. Yeong Soon, Kong Kyuk Dae, and contact info.

Who the hell was this? I asked a Korean female friend on MSN, and we agreed that Yeong Soon sounded like a girl's name, and Kong Kyuk Dae was possibly a university, as "Dae" is shorthand for university. It could be Konkuk University.

I don't know if she was pulling my leg, because Kong Kyuk Dae means "Attacking Forces," and Yeongsoon is one of the last guys I photographed that night. Here's me with him in a picture I have no memory taking.

Back in those days, the only people who went to shows in Korea were band members and people starting bands. It was a fiercely talented crowd but it meant no money for promoters as just about everyone there got comped at the door.

Attacking Forces was a rare band based outside of Seoul. Back then, there virtually was no punk scene outside Seoul, and it's still pretty well the same. The exception is the small inland university town of Cheongju, population just over half a million. There's basically no punk scene in larger Korean cities, including Busan, Korea's second largest city, but for some unknown reason this one little place has produced some of the best punk and hardcore of the peninsula.

Part of it is due to the management of MF Crew, a record label that supports local bands as well as other non-Seoul bands. Attacking Forces is the only skinhead band on that label.

The two skinhead members, Yeongsoon, the singer, and Jongo, the guitarist, are my favourite Koreans.

For a long time, Attacking Forces was a bit of a typical Asian cookie-cutter oi band, but then every single other Korean band doing that sound either broke up or turned metal. Part of the reason is Yeongsoon was conscripted when the scene was at its height, and when he came back everything had changed but him. Oh, except he lost a ton of weight. Now they always get a good rise at shows because they're a rare fun, uncomplicated band with memorable tunes.

There's one other story you must hear about guitarist Jongo. You wouldn't know it to look at him because he's a small guy, but he's the lightweight boxing champion of his entire province.

Apparently at the tournament, just before weigh-in, he was going to be the smallest guy in his weight class. Then he took a dump, and weighed in just at the top of the weight class below. So basically, he won this trophy for defecating.

Attacking Forces were working on an album just before Yeongsoon was sent up to the border fence. It sat in a box for two years before he returned and they finished laying down all the tracks. This was one long-assed recording several years in the making, but it was worth the wait. Download Beer, Blood, and Boots here.

Also included is a cover of "Dirty Old Town" by the Goo Gang Sung Gyo Orchestra, which is just a masturbation reference Yeongsoon made up when he was fooling around with some recording equipment at work one day.

Jiraltan99

Translating literally to "Mad Bullet 99," which is the Korean term for a gas grenade, Jiraltan99 is a name that stirs up weird feelings in Korean people. Once while at work my boss caught me with a Korean dictionary translating the song "바보처럼 살련다" ("Live Like Idiots"), and he simply said "Don't listen to that song." He was simultaneously offended by the band name, the song title's implication, and the disrespectful verb tense of the song. It doesn't take a lot to offend people in South Korea.

These guys were the flagship skinhead band of Korea in 2003 and 2004, when Captain Bootbois vocalist Donghyun was in the army. They were a great live band, partly for their preference of vocals in their native tongue and partly because everyone who saw them play tended to know all the vocals themselves.

Their vocalist, Seungpa, was basically the Korean Joe Hawkins--he was wild, unpredictable, and always up for either verbal or physical sparring.

He had a, uh, special relationship with me, and would always taunt me by reminding me that my name, Jon, is a popular Korean name for pet dogs. In retaliation, I named a kitten after him:

In retaliation, he nicknamed my then girlfriend (now wife) "Mongol Mary."

Unfortunately he was one of those guys who would be all skinhead as fuck one year, and then the next year he'd sober up and try to stop being a jerk. When I first saw Jiraltan99, Seungpa was sporting a pompadour, and a tattoo I'm sure he regrets by now:

Still, it never kept him from taking his shirt off on stage. A few months after that picture, he shaved in again for a year or so, then he officially went into the Skinhead Retirement Plan: rockabilly.

At that point, he gave up the band, and never got back on stage, not even for his new genre of choice. Jiraltan99 was finished, without leaving us a quintessential recording--except for one song on the Skunk Label compilation, and one poorly recorded split album with a band I've never heard of.

The remaining members, Seokyoon and Jongwook, started their own band, Dirty Small Town, who will be spotlighted on this site in the near future. However, Dirty Small Town lacked a good frontman, with the guitarist and bassist switching off vocals a little too frequently to follow along with and leading to the feeling that they're just backup vocalists and their lead singer is offstage. To their credit, they released a good EP with some well-produced songs. Still, their only good shows were when Seungpa jumped back on stage and sang "바보처럼 살련다."

They formed on June 6th, 1999 and are heavily influenced by both the newer streetpunk style bands (i.e. casualties,the virus) and the older full on anarcho bands(i.e. crass, conflict). I've been following them for a long time and still don't have a proper release. I'm giving you guys some assorted tracks by them and if you would like to share, please do.

Captain Bootbois

Since they began, Captain Bootbois have been the quintessential Korean skinhead band, with one two-year break while singer Donghyun was drafted. They haven't always exactly been a skinhead band, and at no point has the band lineup been 100% skinhead. They have had a lot of talent go through the band though. One of the founding members, Joohyun, also founded and played bass for Rux, Ghetto Bombs, and most recently Galaxy Express.

While Donghyun was serving his country, the band replaced him and renamed themselves Blood Pledge. By the time he returned, Blood Pledge and Captain Bootbois were two separate entities with no shared musicians.

Today, Captain Bootbois is made up of:
-Donghyun on vocals, nicknamed "nongbu" or "farmer" for some reason

-Skele or Changwon on guitar. He was one of Korea's original skinheads, and a founding member of Samchung, but disappeared from the scene for a few years and ended up almost becoming a minister. He had a kid, shaved his head, and came back.

-JunKyu on bass. To combat stage fright, he always chews gum while he plays, and you can see him blowing bubbles on stage. Kind of an odd habit.

-Kirk, a Canadian metal drummer who most recently joined the band and pointed them much more into the metal camp.

Captain Bootbois have released one full-length a few years back and one rougher demo earlier. Recently they put out a hard-to-find split with fellow skinhead-turned-metal band Samchung. Unlike their previous songs, these ones are sung mostly in Korean, the only exception being "Fight For Your Right." The song "Belief Like Rock" is a poor translation of a phrase that makes more sense in Korean, basically about a belief that is as strong as rock. There's also one song where they collaborate with Samchung.

Rux

There probably wouldn't be much of a punk scene in Korea today if it weren't for Rux. They have been the center of Korean punk for around five years. The lead singer, Jonghee, also ran Skunk Label, Korea's main punk label, and he also owned Skunk Hell, the main punk club.

The band has changed members several times over the years, and members have joined many other bands. Sometimes they'll put on a big show where all the old members are invited back and they take turns doing guest spots.

Rux has been a very likeable streetpunk band from the beginning, and they have the right amount of singalong lyrics in most of their songs. Jonghee spent a few years of his youth in New York so he knows enough decent English to put together legible lyrics. Most of their songs mix English and Korean.

For a while, it looked like Rux would follow some of the more marketable Korean (pop-)punk bands into the spotlight. They were invited to a very prestigious spot on a live music TV show. Now, when I say live music, I mean they basically mime their instruments and sing along to a previously recorded track. But it is aired live on TV across the nation...with no sneeze button. Why is this relevant? Just watch, and make sure you stick around for the finale.

Immediately afterward, those two guys were arrested and served three months in jail. One of them was the guitarist of the Spiky Brats and the other was the lead singer of Couch. The Couch guy later told me prison was awesome, and the food was so great he actually put on weight. A lot of effort went into also convicting Jonghee, accusing him of putting them up to it and of running a sex club. Fortunately the public lost interest and we all moved on.

They've made several recordings over the years, but I've selected Another Conception from 2005, which has some of their better earlier stuff balanced with decent recording quality.

Fixing Shit

Suck Stuff

In contrast to having the goofiest band name in Korea (their strongest competition is Cock Rasher), Suck Stuff is a surprisingly thoughtful punk band that took and mixed influences unheard of in other Korean bands.

They started in 2001 as a fairly typical streetpunk band singing about scene unity and mixing in very weak English skills. Over time as members changed (the singer Yu Chulhwan is the only original member left) their sound changed. They could be likened to the Korean version of the Clash--and not because they were a Clash ripoff band (that role is taken), but because their songwriting has a similar methodology.

In 2005, they were joined by Paul Brickey, a half-Korean half-American who'd grown up in the US military culture staying with his dad who was stationed in US bases in South Korea. Paul brought something new to the band--partly, English fluency, and also a range of new influences, most notably Social Distortion and Johnny Cash. That's Paul in the front with his lovable pitbull Sukie.

Paul became co-bandleader along with Chulhwan, sharing songwriting and vocal duties. This band configuration produced two albums, first City Rebels and then Rough Times Ahead, before getting signed to Dope Records, which is probably the best that any underground Korean band can hope for. Unfortunately Rough Times Ahead, despite having eleven tracks, was released as an independent EP rather than on Dope for some reason.

Paul gradually became frustrated with working in Korea. As a half-Korean, he automatically was judged by most of the ESL industry to "not look like he can speak English," despite it being the only language he knew. He drifted from job to job, and started to get bitter seeing less talented, less original pop-punk bands surpassing Suck Stuff in the underground music scene.

He shocked us all by announcing in fall 2007 he was joining the US army. He went to the recruiting station in Korea (which doesn't get that many recruits so they bent over backwards for him) and said he wanted to be an army medic, provided they don't station him in Korea. His final official show with Suck Stuff was November 11, 2007. He returned once in June 2008 for another reunion show and to marry his long-distance girlfriend Yumi.

In his absence, the band went on a religious kick for their next album New Classic.

The Anarchy Jerks

The Anarchy Jerks are from Beijing and play a great mix of streetpunk/Oi!. I have their 2005 album, "Wuliao Contingent" which refers I believe to the earliest punks in Beijing. It includes a cover of the Hard Skin classic, "My One Skin". Their releases are pretty hard to track down but here is a link to their old split with the much more harder hitting earlier Brainfailure.

Blood Pledge

The draft really fucks you up. No, not draught beer--I'm talking about having to sacrifice two years of your life between the ages of 18 and 30 to the army, where you will get paid maybe $5 a month and get maybe 10 days off in the entire two years (and that means no weekends). As you can imagine, this wreaks havoc on the Seoul punk scene.

When Captain Bootbois' lead singer Donghyun went into the army, they were fucked for two years. Along came Jonghyuk, his friend and a fellow skinhead willing to step up to the plate. Jonghyuk was post-army, so he took over vocal duties, renaming the band 혈맹 (pronounced Hyul Maeng, translates roughly to Blood Pledge).

They played off and on for the next two years, covering a lot of Bootbois stuff and making their own material. Jonghyuk spent a lot of time in Japan as a youth and is fluent in Japanese, so he was heavily influenced by the Japanese nationalist bands identified as Skinhead Samurai Spirit. He managed to release one four-song EP full of roughly recorded nationalistic songs.

The band never broke up, but after Donghyun returned and Captain Bootbois reactivated, Jonghyuk didn't perform much anymore. You'll still see them once or twice a year, however, usually with an assorted lineup of his friends who aren't also in Bootbois.

Second Combat is a ex-punk, now straight-edge hardcore band from Klang Valley, Malaysia. They are on UnitedXFront Records. They started in 1996 and until 2000 were a traditional punk band. Then they got into the youth crew scene and went militant straight-edge. They now have more X's on things then you can shake a stick at. This is their transition CDEP on Sober Records entitled "One More Fight".

Oppression Head is a hard hitting Skinhead/Oi! band from the West End Flower City. They've been around since 2001 and are heavily influenced by first wave Oi! bands like The 4 Skins and The Oppressed, etc. They were founded by Bres, Butong, Vino, and Egi but they split up in 2006. SA is my all time favorite japanese punk band.
They’re formed in 1985 and ended in 1988. During their first phase, they only released one single named “I Get Position”.
In the year 2000, Taisei, the vocalist in their early years, reformed the band together with Naoki (Laughin’ Nose former guitar player), plus other two guys, and since then, they keep doing, what in my opinion is, the best punk music in Japan.
Their sound is fast and aggressive, but, at the same time, is really catchy, with a lot of sing-alongs. The only bad thing is their english.
They have already release 7 full length, 2 mini albums, and 4 singles. I’ve upload a very rare mini album released in 2003. This album contains their best song Naughty Boys (meet us there), a classic punk rock’n’roll Cock Sparrer style song.

It has 3 songs (One is the classic Piss off MTV Punks) from the always great Tom & Bootboys (Nori runs Pogo 77), 3 from noisier Greedy Bambi, 4 from even louder Little Bastards, another 4 from insanely loud Lasting Noise Attack and the last 3 tracks are from Defeat who end it on a more chaospunk sound. I will admit that I have never really liked listening to the 3 bands in the middle through headphones so I recommend large, large speakers. Its a Malay Invasion! This is a really good comp featuring both new and classic Malaysian bands. You have the Oi! godfathers of Malaysia - A.C.A.B. along with Gerhana Skacinta and the Times which I believe both feature past members of A.C.A.B. Gerhana Skacinta is a rocking ska/rocksteady band and The Times have a more garage rock kind of sound. The other bands all have a more classic melodic Oi! sound and are a great introduction into the Malay scene. Its on the premier Malay label Clockwork Records and was released in 2005. You can actually find this cd much more easily then most of my other postings. Its still available here: http://shopping.wanita.net/. Shipping to the U.S. is quick and reasonable and I've never had any problems from this site. They also have some other Malaysian Oi! releases. So buy it you cheap bastards!

Eastern Youth Part 2

First I want to point out the purpose of my blog, again. I want people from around the world, people that wouldn't normally even know some of these bands exist, exposed to some great bands from the Far East. I try to give all the information I know about said bands including their websites and if I know where you can get their releases. I support the bands with my whole heart and only want to share their music with a much larger audience then they would normally have. If any band wants their music taken down then all they have to do is ask. If no one in a band says anything then I will continue to share their great music with as many people as I can. I hit Indonesia up alot recently because I've been listening to bands from that area alot and the people I know there are great people and great musicians. Malaysia, Japan, China and Korea are up next, as time allows, and the same rules apply to them. If you like what you hear search the bands out and try to find as much info about the band as possible. Anger Flares

It’s my first post in “my” new blog, so I have to start with great music.
Anger Flares is a great Oi! Band from Japan. They sound like the traditional english bands, with lots of sing alongs and street anthems.
They have released 2 albums (“Begin to Walk” & “A Way of Life”), a split with Clash Dogs, and were part of many compilations, like the famous anti fascist compilation “Class Pride Worldwide Vol. 3”.
The members of this band call themselves SHARP skinheads, but it’s a very controversial label. Some people say that they hang around with members of bands like United We Stand and The Hawks, both part of the nationalist japanese skinhead movement.
They use to have a website and a myspace page, but both are down, don’t know why. But if you want:

They all are stand out, but I think Rock the Booze gets the head nod from me.

The Fishka

The Fishka is a traditional Skinhead Reggae/ska band from Bekasi. They formed in 1997 and have been featured on one comp, "Together As One II". They have also recorded one album, "One Love, One Heart, One Family" in 2002 on The Fishka & Lion's Roar Records. They lost the DAT tape for their recordings and moved to a new record label, Warrior Records, to re-release their album. The Fishka were the second Indonesian skin band that I ran across and I feel in love with them. They play great traditional music with actual intelligent lyrics. Stupid Law is my favorite track.

Bretel

Bretel is the first Oi! band from Jakarta, Indonesia that I came upon a few years ago. They are amazing. Bretel formed in 2000 with the first line-up of Eday (vocals/bass), Aziz (guitars/vocals), and QQ (drums). They covered The Oppressed, The Business, and other Oi! and punk bands. They recorded 14 songs in 2002 but didn't release them. In 2005 they recorded 8 more Oi! songs and released the album Working Class Skinhead on WC Recs. Brotherhood is my favorite track off that release. Eday then became the vocalist and they added K-dir on bass. Since several members of the new line-up had a love for skinhead reggae and ska, those influences were added to their music. Bretel then adopted the motto FROM Oi! TO SKINHEAD REGGAE and named their next album after it. The album is split into two sides, with one being more Oi! influenced and one being more reggae influence. Proud is the stand out track to me and I must have listened to it a hundred times by now. If you like the music QQ is a reliable guy and loves trades so contact him.
